Navy remembers it, is tortured by it, but Ollie doesn't. He isn't. He can't be, not when the memories of it come only in flashes, just a fading dream.

[break][break] Instead, though, a smile dawns his face.

[break][break] "Sorry," the Head Ranger gives a laugh. "Gotta be my fault. You know me - I like traveling too much." His lips curve into a grin, teasing, before he adds, "Or maybe your fault. Maybe if you became a Ranger like I suggested, we'd have more chances to work together."

[break][break] But Ollie wasn't complaining. Navy was a Gym Leader, and a damn good one at that.

[break][break] "Back to Penny?" He lets out a laugh. "You think she'd care?"

[break][break] A memory pulses, stirs. Not from Goodbye Galar, but from that day in the hospital. When his gaze had been all crystal-sharp pain. All hurt. Today, though, he has nothing but sun for Navy.

[break][break] His Wyrdeer surfaces and with it, revealing a LIGHT SCREEN to temporarily shield them from damages while Navy cuts away at supernatural stone.

“Guess I’m just better with people than Pokemon.” He answers. It isn’t the first time he’s responded to Ollie with some variation of the phrase when prodded about the rangers.[break][break]
Being near the core hurts. A thousand magenta needles dig into him, along every line of his body. Looking down, he sees no injury. It’s all in his mind. That’s what he tells himself. Pulling out the specialized pick, the one that the scientists assure him will work, he begins chipping away at a god.[break][break]
Voyager, his Arcanine, slips out behind him. Instead of bringing a Pokemon that could expedite the process, he brings one that makes their lives a little easier. Voyager howls. His howl conjures the morning sun high above them.[break][break]
“]I think she’d care plenty, ya dunce.” He manages a smile of his own while he works. It’s slow going. One of them’s on defense, the other moves at a pace that doesn’t break his back. The trade-off is that they’re safe. Navy refuses to die for this fool’s errand, nor will he risk Ollie’s help. Nihilego begin to drift in, just watching them. Glowing and humming quiet songs.[break][break]
“Arceus.” He comments, wiping sweat from his brow. “I see those guys every time I come down here and I never get used to them. They give me the creeps.”

Good, evil, and all other human constructs matter little beneath the sea. Crystals light up, a poison mist rolls in, the light screen protecting poor helpless humans. They play with things they do not understand, they mine a sleeping god for minerals.[break][break]
Cast in the light of the crystals are a thousand different worlds. Old worlds, worlds that will never be, worlds so far beyond human imagination as to be unknowable. From the mist rides a man on a Spectrier, a figure that once loyally served Ollie in another life.[break][break]

“Ollie!” Navy screams. An anchor shot launches, shooting right for the ranger. The sheriff’s Urshifu interposes, his fist slamming against the chain. It breaks off, flying into the mist. It buys them a moment, just a moment, as ghostly light gathers in the Spectrier’s mouth.[break][break]
“I’ll cover you. I think if we can knock ‘em back into the mist, they’ll die.”[break][break]
If they want to see tomorrow, they must survive today.

It's not something Ollie hasn't done before. He has a sense of deja vu as the room squeezes tight, even as he and his pokemon wear away at the crystal rock, attempting to mine it for it's ore.

[break][break] The things he does for the League, he thinks.

[break][break] The things he does because he has to.

[break][break] But as the room shudders with sudden power, even the Head Ranger's gaze grows blurry. He reminds himself not to look, knowing what's in store for him, but he can't help it. His gaze flicks to the sight of movement, and the sight of two young children staring back at them. Blond hair and amber eyes. Blond hair and green eyes.

[break][break] His throat tightens.

[break][break] " ███ and ███ "

[break][break] "OLLIE!"

[break][break] his friend's words cut through the air, jolting him back to his senses, just as the ANCHOR SHOT saves his life. relief is palpable in his eyes as he looks back at Navy.

[break][break] "thanks bro," he says, reaching for his belt with a fierce nod. "you got it."

[break][break] "c'mon mocha!" he says, raising his voice. "you heard him! shadow ball!"

[break][break] the wyrdeer roars, stamping it's hooves against the floor, before a SHADOW BALL grows between it's horns, shooting off towards the hallucinations.

Shadows part the mist and obliterate the phantom rider. They have their ore. They have their way back, though it will soon close. Swift as a cowboy in a duel, Navy has a pokeball in his hand. Thin Lizzy, his Cyclizar, is thrown out. Navy mounts up, and shouts at Ollie.[break][break]
“Quick! Before the mist reforms! Let’s get the hell outta here!” Lizzy shifts gears, her tail tightening into the shape of a wheel. It burns rubber across the ground, flying out of the chamber towards home, freedom, and woe. She flies so fast that ore flies from his saddlebag.[break][break]
Only later will Navy notice the error, and only later will he realize that the Nihilego left them unmolested the whole ride back. Only later will he recognize these two facts are interwoven, and by doing so save many League officers grief on their own trips to this grand core. Navy whoops in celebration, happy to finally be free, racing back to a world of logic and common sense.[break][break]
“Drinks are on me when we get back to Dewford!”
